What is my greatest desire<\/strong>? To make a profound contribution to healing trauma around the world. Is that a small desire? No! It\u2019s a huge desire, and I realize it sounds a bit grandiose. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>

What are desires?<\/h2>

“Where needs<\/strong><\/a> are about the here and now and are essential to our well-being, desires<\/strong> are the dessert after a good meal.”<\/span><\/p>

It\u2019s not necessary, but man, oh man, it\u2019s so good! Desires<\/strong> are, after all, experiences, events, or life paths that are a perfect fit for us\u2014things that make us thrive and that we\u2019re truly willing to go out of our way for. <\/p>

Living out our desires isn\u2019t essential for a free and happy life, but it is certainly wonderful when we can live according to our desires<\/strong>. Yet things often go wrong with those desires. They end up coming from our survival system by accident, rather than from our Holy Grail<\/a>. But how do you recognize that? <\/p>

Desire or expectations?<\/h3>

Sometimes we attach an expectation<\/strong> to a desire. That\u2019s a very specific way in which our desire has to come true. That nice woman has to meet a very detailed list of criteria on the very first date, because otherwise you might end up with a friendship, but not a romance. <\/p>

The job you really want has to fit your schedule, offer a competitive salary, and provide opportunities for growth. If it\u2019s just a nice job with too few hours and a low salary, it won\u2019t meet your expectations<\/strong> \u2014so it\u2019s not really your dream job after all. <\/p>

Or we have expectations in a relationship<\/strong>. Lists of demands, unspoken hopes, or wishes that your partner will intuitively understand <\/em>and give you what you need\u2014without you even having to ask! Who wouldn\u2019t want that? <\/p>

When we have expectations\u2014specific ideas about how our desires should play out\u2014we\u2019re bound to be disappointed sooner or later. And so, there\u2019s no point in doing it anymore. <\/p>

That\u2019s actually a bit of a shame, because when we embrace our desires with open arms<\/strong>, we often get more than we hoped for, and life regularly surprises us with wonderful experiences.<\/p>

Desires that suit you<\/h4>

Then there are those desires that no longer fit into your life. It\u2019s fine to want to win *The Voice*, but if you can\u2019t sing well and aren\u2019t willing to take singing lessons, your chances are pretty slim. <\/p>

That\u2019s why it\u2019s especially rewarding when your desires align with who you are\u2014with your heart, your qualities, your skills, your character, your history, and the way you want to shape your life. Desires that truly belong to you. <\/p>
